Sculpture in New Zealand jade - "Whales in the Bay"
Whales in the Bay - Serpentine Cobble on Driftwood Base
Whales are often seen in Golden Bay.
Here we have a cobble of Serpentine from the Takaka River. Using the yellow rind to emphasise the mountains surrounding the bay, the whale tail is an extension of Separation Point whose ancient name is Whakareirea (Place of the White Whale) and it is said to be the place where the first people landed and settled.
Measurements - Stone - length 190mm x width 150mm x depth 30mm
Driftwood base - length 210mm x width 240mm x depth 80mm
