Huriawa - Takaka Serpentine on Red beach Driftwood Base

Carved from a cobble of Serpentine from the Takaka River ‘Huriawa’ is the Taniwha that occupies Te Waikoropupu Springs, she is the only female taniwha in maori mythology and her domain is the underground waterways of the Takaka aquifer.

From a more ancient realm she was called down from Parapara mountain to bail out the rear of the Waka of the Gods and to keep the underground waterways clear of debris so the energy can flow.

The stylised hair emphasised by the yellow rind represents the flow of water into the springs. She can still be found there today and longs to hear your karakia coming across the waters.

Although Serpentine is not true Jade it is from the same family and is a perfect medium for sculptuer

Measurements - Face - length 90mm x width 90mm x depth 30mm

Driftwood Base - length 110mm x width 180mm x depth 50mm
